mono. a series by disequil

designed in 2018: Back in 2017 when I first saw BTS live at the WINGS tour at Prudential Center, Namjoon’s ending ment on the second day was something that has stuck with me even up until now, especially when people ask me why I love BTS so much. Joon’s words were “Music and performance transcends language, countries and races,” and the sheer amount of love and passion that BTS is able to convey through their music to their fans is a testament of that. I’m often asked things like ‘you don’t even understand Korean, how do you even understand what they’re singing about?’ and am often brought back to those words that Joon spoke in March of 2017 as he and the rest of BTS gave their final speeches, surrounded by a sea of rainbow army bombs. To me, you don’t have to understand, you just feel. It’s extremely hard for me to put into words for me but music in general has often been more about feeling to me because once you can let yourself get lost in a song, that in itself is how I ‘understand’ music apart from actively looking up and reading the lyric translations. Which brings me to this mono series.
For this whole entire series of designs, I went in with the intention of not looking up lyrics or translations since I wanted it to kinda be a mix of Joon’s music and how I interpreted it through his storytelling through each track. (Kinda like a one sided creative collab in a way)  Most of the designs are based off of things that I took from each song on my first listen though along with a lot of heavy influences from Kim Daily. The design sketch process started back in October 2018, and I’ve finally finished designing and altering all 7 designs in Jan 2019. As someone who has watched Joon’s growth over the past several years, this series and playlist in general mean a lot to me. I’ve always wanted to design something Joon themed and this playlist honestly gave me the perfect opportunity to because of how much it resembles Joon as a person now as well as his growth to get to who he is today. So, I’m super excited to share this project with everyone and I hope you guys enjoy each design as much as much as I do!
